About Anjoli

The Artist

One of the most distinguished and prominent Indian artists today, Anjolie Ela Menon was born in Burnpur, Asansol, in a Bengali and American household on the 17th of July 1940. She took up art at an early age, even selling some of her art by the age of 15. She then went on to study briefly at the J.J. School of Applied Arts and then studied English literature at Miranda House, Delhi University. Her incredible use of colour, creating multiple layers of oils over time to achieve a patina-like effect, has given her the stature of being a celebrated colourist.

Today, Menon is one of the most celebrated modernists of our time, experimenting with several mediums and subjects over time. She was one of the first to create works in the genre of kitsch in India, along with experimenting with a myriad of mediums such as chairs, windows, door frames and Murano glass to create vivid, emphatic works. The subjects she often delves into include family, melancholia, female nudes and Indian culture, all stemming from her personal experiences and travels.

Today, Anjolie Ela Menon lives and works in Delhi.
